We are coming up to my favorite time of year! If you just think of only planting in a Spring garden, think again! Fall, here in Dallas Texas, is another chance at great fresh wholesome food for your family!
In my family we have what we call “The Birthday Marathon.” It starts with my firecracker baby on the 4th of July and ends with my Friday the 13th baby in August, with a smattering of birthdays in between. This time of celebration takes everything we’ve got, monetarily and energy wise. We are busy making sure everyone feels special on their special day.
We have a tradition during this time to take a trip to our favorite swimming hole. Yes, right in the middle of the big city! Sometimes it is the simple times of spending time together that make the best memories!
During this dry hot time I take a gardening vacation of sorts. I empty most garden beds and get ready for Fall planting. Every bed gets a top dressing of rabbit manure and compost. I also clean out my vermicomposting bin and my meal worm tank to make free fertilizer for my garden. Below are some links to videos on those things, if you are interested. I always say raising insects is the most sustainable thing I do on my homestead!

Happy Homesteading!

Swim hole in the middle of Dallas? Where?
Hi Christie, We go to Breckenridge Park to play. So it is actually in East Richardson. We have been going there for years. It is a lot of fun and very clean and it’s free!
Oy, I hear ya on the birthday marathon! I’ve got a few between the end of June and the 10th of August, so I know how they seem to eat up summer!
