I know you looked at that headline and thought, “Doesn’t that happen in the Spring?” Well, welcome to Texas. Because of our hotter than Hell Summers, we do things a little bit different down here. At least when it comes to rabbits.
Rabbits are a Winter animal, hence the full fur coat. They REALLY struggle in the heat. In fact, the male rabbit goes temporarily sterile in those hot Summer months. So, we wait for that cool Fall weather, to get his fertility back; then game on!
But wait, it’s not that simple!
The shorter days(less day light) means, that EVERYTHING IN THAT RABBIT’S INSTINCT IS TELLING HER NOT TO BREED AT THE BEGINNING OF WINTER!!
Watch this first video and meet the couples we are pairing up. Also see why I pulled Big Ears from the breeding program at the last minute!
In the video below see the tricks we use to successfully breed at the beginning of Winter when all the odds are working against us!
Follow along here on our blog to see our journey in raising backyard rabbits. However if you want a course with all the information in one place then you are in luck! My son and I filmed a Raising Backyard Rabbit Course for the Grow Network. The course is along side some amazing courses in the membership area at the Grow Network. I can’t say enough about Majory Wildcraft and her wonderful team! They were so encouraging to me and even lent us some video equiptment to film the course. It is $10/month to gain access to these courses. Follow this link for more info on becoming an honors lab member: Grow Network Honors Lab
