Every year I like to try a new vegetable or two in my front yard garden.  This year I tried Chinese Yellow Melon.  Having been given the seeds from a friend I didn’t really know what to expect. Turns out there are many Asian melons, some tasting like cucumber. I had my fingers crossed that I didn’t have one of those. If you know me well you know that cucumber is the only veggie I don’t care for.  I was pleasantly surprised by the 5-6″ globes that turned a bright yellow color when ripe. The pulp was white sweet and slightly crisp. My kids LOVED them! The only pest that seemed to bother them were the squirrels. My squirrel proof cover took care of that. When I gardened at the community garden the squirrels, rats and possums took out every melon just before it turned ripe. They seemed to know when they were ripe before I did! They certainly ate them before I did. I came up with a way to foil their evil plans. By cutting off the top half of a tomato cage, leaving the spikes to push into the ground and covering with chicken wire I created a cage of sorts to put around each melon til it was good and ready. Mwaaa ha ha!!!  I laugh at squirrels every where. Take that you rats with good P.R.  What new fruit or veggie did you try in your garden this season? Was it a boom or a bust? Since I don’t know many people around me that are Urban Farmers I would love to hear from you. It inspires me to know you are out there doing the same crazy wonderful things I am!
