The Dance Begins: Dealing with city ordinances

Chicken wire with posts are not allowed.

It is ironic that the day after posting that I am officially an front yard urban gardener the city inspector came knocking at the door. Now I get to dance with the city. What I mean by that is they have several problems with my front yard garden. The fencing is the main issue at this point.  Chicken wire is not an acceptable material for a fence in the city with which I reside. I have submitted a plan to the city to continue with the pallet/picket fence. After reviewing my plans they will get back with me, at which time, I hopefully will be allowed to buy a fence permit. An inspector will come by to inspect said fence at date of completion. Sounds rather straight forward doesn’t it.  Let me just tell you that nothing the city does is straight forward, rather two steps forward, three steps back. Hence the dance begins.

Because this blog is about helping people learn from my mistakes, I will tell you what I wish I had done in retrospect. I wish I had met with some one at City Hall and educated myself on ordinances. It turns out if I had made my fence under 2 1/2 ft tall all this could have been avoided. I did of course search for this information on the computer but obviously did not find the information I needed.

I am well aware that if anyone at the city does not like my front yard garden they could use the law to persecute me and certainly out spend me in court. However the Lord makes it clear that we are not to worry or have a spirit of fear.  Instead that we should trust in him and pray about such matters. My Father knows that the garden is His and that everything I do is to glorify Him. When the Lord is for us who can be against us!

I will keep you updated on the dance. For the rest of the story.

Please leave a comment. I love hearing from ya’ll.
